I closed my emails and silenced my notifications when I was coding.

To read each word and not skim through it.

I made a conscious effort to read programming documentation slower.

I practiced looking people in the eyes to stay present in the conversation.I paid attention to when my mind started drifting during conversations (usually 30 seconds in) and made a conscious effort to bring my focus back into the conversation.

I then practiced training my brain to focus how I focused when I took my meds, when I was off them. I began to recognize the difference of my focus and behavior on my meds, to my focus and behavior off my meds. The point I really want to make is what I LEARNED from all of this and what I became aware of.

With that being said, I’m not implying medication is the key for learning to code with ADHD. Things started to make sense and I finally felt like I could focus enough to learn to code. The medication helped me focus longer and I began to really absorb coding. She prescribed me with some medication to help me focus. I saw a psychologist and she diagnosed me with ADHD. It came to a point where my inability to focus for more than an hour was really starting to inhibit my growth as a developer. I thought to myself, CRAP! How will I ever become a successful programmer if I can’t even stay focused for longer than 30 minutes?!įor 6 months I did everything I could to improve my focus for coding. The instructor was great! But my attention span was not… After 30 mins of listening to the instructor, my brain couldn’t focus a minute longer, it was exhausted from information overload, I’d get distracted and my mind would begin to wander and daydream. I questioned if coding was really for me. I remember my first week at Coding Campus. What I learned VERY quickly was coding is a much slower, more in depth, analyze kind of thinking process. Now be mindful, being in sales for 9 years, my brain was trained to think fast and act fast.

I was stoked out of my mind to finally learn Full Stack Web Development. I enrolled in a 12 week development bootcamp, Coding Campus located in Provo Utah. I took my first dive into actual programming back in April 2015. Because of this, my determination to learn to code was 10 fold. But that didn’t ruin my determination to pursue programming and retreat back to sales. Well…the startup crashed and burned…and the “foundation” I worked so hard to build for 9 years crumbled. At the time, it was the best opportunity to get involved in the tech/programming industry. All I could count on was to work hard, give my 100% commitment and do whatever it took to be successful and make money.

The startup couldn’t offer a consistent pay (or even a guaranteed pay in that matter).I joined an App Development startup to get my feet wet in the tech industry.I was determined to learn programming and didn’t want any ‘crutch’ to lean on, so I quite! I quit the sales industry I worked in for 9 years during this time in which I built a foundation and life for my family (wife and 3 kids).So how did I make the transition from sales to code? My ADHD helped me in the sales industry to think fast and act fast. After diving into programming, I realized for the last 9 years my ADHD was masked by the fast pace environment I thrived in. What I didn’t know at the time….was I had ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I figured I’d catch onto coding pretty fast… I was a logical thinker, paid attention to detail and was a really good at figuring things out and solving problems. I sat on the idea of learning to code for 2 years, and finally took the plunge. I was ready to unplug from sales and move onto a new venture. I had been working in sales management for 9 years.
